Link Building 101

I’m employed at a company called Pop Labs and basically my role is two-fold. I am a project coordinator which means after an account is sold by our sales team, they are assigned to me or one of or PC’s and we manage the account. I make sure that the client understands exactly what we are going to do, how we are going to do it, why we are going to do it and how they will benefit from it. I’m also on our marketing team. During the development of the new account, we research the client’s business, competitors, keywords, etc…and begin developing the online marketing campaign. A major part of what we do is optimization. Not to long ago, we had our “Pop Labs SES Explosion” which was basically a seminar where different employees made presentations about all sorts of online marketing related topics. I teamed up with Brad P, one of our marketing specialist, and we presented on the topic of link building. To keep it interesting so it wouldn’t be standard presentation with powerpoint, I wrote a rap about building a link campaign. I think it came out well, especially since it wasn’t rehearsed. Anyway, after several people asked where could they watch it at and requested copies of the lyrics, I figured I’d post here and on YouTube. Our creative services and technology director posted it on our company blog.

You create a new site and its content heavy,
With the right amount of pictures you believe it’s ready,
So you launch it trying to put money in da bank,
But when you search and try to find yourself, you can’t,
So you thank until your mind goes blank,
Got titles and headers but no page rank,
Sooner or later it will show if I wait,
In the meantime make sure my code validate,
And it do,
Hmm, now what I’m supposed to do,
Add meta information and alt tags too,
Still don’t get listing,
Something must be missing,
Brad and Chuck recommended doing link building,
So you start hunting down sites like a predator,
Doing back links on all your competitors,
Whoever linking to them need to link to me,
Is it free, do we swap, or do I pay a fee,
Well take it from us, before you take that step,
Some things about the site that you might want to check,
Did they use a link farm or some dirty tactics,
Could have a bad effect on your site that’s drastic,
Could’ve link baited, look at what they created,
Compare it to yours, is it even related,
Take the time, go inspect and see,
Take advantage of paid directories,
If you follow all the steps with a little bit of patience,
Get links from relevant sites that are favorites,
Update your content on the regular basis,
I’m confident you’ll make it to first page placement

Dude! I can’t stop laughing. Cause the rhymes are so on point, but the topic…I would have never thought about making a rap about. I need to let all of my “other” clients watch these. I’m black so I can say this, we have not fully tapped into the power of the internet as a marketing tool. If I could get more brothers off of Myspace and King.com, I could make a difference. Like what you doing. I’m trying to launch a small company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Take it easy!

Great rap, here are a few more lines:
Gimme the links, keep ’em running
So that my visitors start coming
Google and other engines can take a hike
As long as quality links point to my site

  30. Link Building is one of the most significant aspect of the off page optimization process and is a major determinant of the popularity of your site. For search engines, back links or links pointing to your website indicate that you are ‘hot’ in the online marketplace.
